Why Qom is worth going

On our second day I travelled down South to the city of Qom. It’s not in everyone’s itinerary as the fast growing city is not really appealing. Though I think you should consider a stop here and head to the Hazrat-e Masumeh. I am still not really sure what it exactly is, but the guidebooks say it’s a shrine.

Why 1 day in Tehran is enough!

Arriving in Tehran started with a horrific taxi ride from the international airport to the city center. I was offered a pick-up from the hostel in Tehran and looking back I was glad I paid the €25. I have seen bad traffic, lack of respect and crazy things happening on the road throughout Asia, but Iran will definitely end up high in a list of insane traffic around the world.

Getting a visa on arrival Iran

Choosing my next destination was fairly easy as Iran was on my bucketlist for a long time. To be honest Dubai or Abu Dhabi is not a real Middle East experience anymore so I was excited to find it Iran. The fact though that most countries in this region have strict visa policies was always holding me back, but then I read about the visa on arrival in Iran and I immediately made up my mind to travel to this Islamic Republic.

Off to Iran with Emirates Airlines

Excitement is still the keyword for expressing my feelings at the moment. I’m on board the Emirates flight from Dubai to Tehran, the capital of Iran. First of all I am excited to visit a new country, which will be number 76 on my long list.

Too many mosques in Istanbul

When looking at pictures from Istanbul you will always find a mosque in it somewhere. They are literally scattered all over the city and their minarets are looming large above the city. In the Old City you will stumble upon several Muslim worship places and five times a day you will hear their call for prayer. This sound always makes me feel like I’m travelling!

10 reasons Pushkar is the best city in India

Why Pushkar is the best city in India? I can come up with many reasons, but along my journey through the Northeast of India I have been advised to travel to Pushkar numerous times by fellow travellers. Travellers and locals recommended me to hit the road as soon as possible and drive to this peaceful sandy town in the province of Rajasthan. It has to be said, Pushkar definitely is among my favourite cities in India now.

Istanbul off the beaten track | walking tour Fener Balat

Istanbul is such a huge city and you can easily spend a couple days here doing all the standard touristy stuff and become a 'Touristanbul'! It is not hard to find something about visiting the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque or the Grand Bazaar, but what if you are after an Istanbul off the beaten track adventure? If you’re the kind of tourist who likes to get to get away from the crowds, then a walking tour around Fener-Balat is your best bid!

The coloured houses of Fener - Balat Istanbul

What to do in a capital so big with even more inhabitants than my own country? Where to start and what for sure not to miss? I have been in Istanbul for a couple days now and obviously did the most common sight seeing things. If you would be here only a couple days then I would suggest to take a hop-on-hop-off bus to see it all in one day or at least as much as possible and call yourself a touristanbul! LOL But again: I’m travelling, I’m not on a holiday and therefore I like to get to off the Istanbul off the beaten path destinations.

Getting in touch with Istanbul locals

Nowadays there are numerous ways to meet people through the web. Just take a look at your phone and you will realize that you also have one of those apps for networking. I admit I am a social media addict and meet lots of people through the web. Staying in hostels makes it super easy to meet travellers and most of them have the same mindset and are looking to connect with people from all over the world. But in my case I meet a lot of people through apps like for example Instagram.

Welcome to Istanbul

After a long an unexpected epic weekend in Cologne I finally made my way to Istanbul. Finally, cause it was not really my plan to stay in Germany that long. I left home Friday morning and said goodbye to mom and dad and ended up in Cologne. It was the weekend of El Clasico and since I am a huge Barca aficionado it was a weekend to remember.

How to survive the Seychelles on a budget

When people talk about their holiday in the Seychelles they were probably on a honeymoon or they have a shit load of money. That’s at least what I was thinking when people talked about this remote archipelago somewhere in the Indian Ocean. But even I visited this tiny country and I have not been married yet, nor did I win the lottery. That means it must be possible to visit these islands on a budget!

Best hotel in Medellin

While studying Spanish in Colombia I stayed in one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Medellin: El Poblado. As Medellin is known for their beautiful people I kind of had to subscribe to a gym to make sure I was not falling out of favor with the locals.

Born in The Netherlands a long time ago I grew up in the South of Holland, just a couple kilometers from the German border as well as a couple kilometers from the Belgium border. Considerably close to a couple borders, you can say I have been spoon-fed with different cultures, different languages and crossing borders.
