Why is Goa trying to be the Ibiza of India when it really is not? I may be wrong but comparing Goa with Ibiza is like comparing Barcelona with Manila. May be that is a little unfair as you might know I think Manila is one of the most ugly cities I have ever been. Sorry Filipinos! But what I mean to say is that I have been to Goa now twice, but to me this is a place for hippies, not for hipsters!
After an intense trip to Dudhwa National Park trying to spot tigers in the wild and an exhausting trip to Hampi, (both really cool adventures, click on the link to read the stories and watch the videos) my trip to India with Jet Airways was coming to an end. But not before I had two days to chill on the beach in Goa.
Where to go in Goa
Goa is not just a beach town, like I always thought it was. Goa is a small state in India popular for its beaches and notorious for its parties. It has a long coastline with many different bays and honestly I think you need to spend some time here to find out which beach suits you most. North Goa is where the airport is and here is where mass tourism arrived as well. It is not the prettiest part of Goa but here it is easy to mingle with young people looking to party and cure their hangover with a day on the beach. Surfing is popular at some places too. Smoking weed is illegal but seems accepted. People come to Goa to simply have a good time.
The more you travel South the less crowded the beaches get. If you want to get off the beaten path in Goa then definitely go beach hopping in this part of the state until you find your hidden gem. Two years ago I went to Palolem, the most popular beach town in South Goa. It was off-season and really quiet. The peak season for Goa is December till February when temperatures are moderate and there is hardly any rainfall. This year I visited Palolem at the end of April, right before the start of the rainy season. During the day it was getting really hot and temperatures reached 34 degrees, though the sea breeze brought in some cool wind from time to time. To me it was too hot to stay in the sun honestly, so I spent my days in the shadow. Because it was the end of the season there was not much going on and to me that was actually perfect. The deserted beaches created the ultimate laid-back vibe to end my trip to India.
Coincidentally I actually ended up in Agonda Beach instead of popular Palolem Beach and it turned out to be a great choice. This sleepy beach town was way smaller and everything is basically just concentrated around one beach road with some nice restaurants and beachfront accommodation. I found my new favorite spot in South Goa! The kind of little village were so now and then there is a power cut and hardly any phone signal. Agonda Beach is a place to literally unwind, enjoy the serenity and find peace. Agonda Beach is just 5 minutes North of Palolem by tricycle, a 200 INR ride.
Where to stay in Agonda Beach
The White Resort
To me that is an easy to answer question after I found The White Resort. As soon as I walked in I got the holiday feeling. From the airy reception you walk down the path towards the ocean with on both sides brand new lovely cottages inspired by Ibiza.
The stylish resort lives up to its name and is completely white. Summer feelings are all over this place. The White Resort also is the only beachfront accommodation in Agonda with a pool and has amazing dining options.
The only thing that lacks here is the term boutique, because this entire place screams CUTE! The White Resort surely is the best Agonda Beach accommodation available. I also checked out other Agonda Beach hotels but none of them come close to the upscale White Resort. Prices start from 5,500 INR. Check out the availability and the actual prices on Booking.com.
Yes a beer at the resort is more expensive than other place, but damn the sunsets are good here.
This beer was still less than $2!
Budget accommodation in Agonda Beach
If you are looking for budget accommodation than you are spoiled for choice. You could simply just wing it, but definitely in peak season book your Agonda Beach hotel online. I prefer Agoda for traveling in India and Asia to book my hotels with. Just find some Agonda Beach accommodations with high ratings, like for example: Galaxys Beachhuts, Dersy Cottages, Mariposa Beach Grove.
All these places can be booked for less than $30 per night.
If you look around you can find some really nice beach huts. I found this property also on Agoda, it is called Ramsons Resort and it was right on the beach. Basic, but great location of course.
Another good option is the mid-range Dunehill with some nice cottages on the beach.
Where to eat
A simple but good place to go for food is Fatima. They have everything from Indian cuisine to pancakes and omelettes and more. The price is right, there is wifi that actually works and it is quick, simple and good.
A good beach front property to eat delicious Indian food is Dunehill.
For a little more fine dining on the beach you have to be at The White Resort again, where you can order lobster, grilled prawns and more mouthwatering dishes.
But my favorite restaurant in Agonda beach is Zest, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant and a beloved hangout for travelers. If you travel solo to Agonda Beach and want to meet people then I am sure you succeed here. Zest has not only delicious food, but with its garden setting, sofas and even a little boutique shop it totally gave me the Bali feeling. I met so many cool people here and Zest definitely made my stay at Agonda Beach.
Best beach in Goa: Agonda
The Ibiza vibes at The White Resort mixed with the Bali vibes at Zest made Agonda Beach one of my new favorite places to hangout in India. When you will ask me now what is the best beach in Goa, I without any doubt would send you to Agonda Beach.
How to get to and from Goa
There are multiple long distance busses that serve Goa with for example Hampi or Mumbai.
An overnight sleeper from Goa to Mumbai cost $15.
Night busses in India are perfectly fine. They are full of travelers and a great way to meet people.
