The only place in Austria where you can ski 365 days a year is located in the Zillertal. If you are looking for a ski resort for a couple days then definitely consider taking a tri to Tux. The little village might not be as popular as the nearby Mayrhofen, but it also has some decent après ski options, a disco, all kind of accommodation and a top-notch mountain on your doorstep. Within 20-25 minutes, 3 gondolas take you all the way to the top of this resort, where amazingly wide runs are waiting for you.
If skiing is more important than après ski and you only have a few days, then try this resort. Snow conditions are mostly great in the winter season due to its high location. Runs are long, wide and fast. Mostly all runs are red and perfect for the intermediate skier. If the weather is in your favor you will have fabulous days. There are a couple huts and restaurants on the mountain. Go to the Gletsjerhütte on a staggering altitude of 3,050m for dining in the clouds. Fantastic views and beautiful sunsets early in the season are included! On your way down to the valley stop at the Tuxer-Joch Haus, beach chairs are lined up and some music is played on the background. Don’t fall asleep!
Another positive feature is that the area is not crowded at all and ski classes and kids are hardly seen. Though there is a ski school and a ski track for beginners.
The park is called Betterpark and features 5 lines for all levels, including some obstacles and a superpipe. Its located on 3,200m altitude and is only closed for a couple months in summer. I sadly cant review the park since it was closed when I was visiting!
Some conditions though are a bit less popular in this ski resort. Although the gondolas are very modern, parts of the ski area are only accessible by T-bar lifts: slow and less convenient for snowboarders. As well as some older chairlifts that are necessary to take while exploring the whole area. Investing in their lift facilities would be welcome!
Where to stay in Hintertux?
I only visited this resort once and stayed a couple nights in Brugger's Genießerhotel Lanersbacherhof. It had fantastic reviews and was about $120 per night, for a 4 star hotel this standard, great vzlue for money. It was also mentioned on the local Hintertux website.
