Flying to Tallinn and planning your Estonia trip? Don't get stuck with high roaming costs and slow overseas data roaming. Get yourself a local sim card on arrival and enjoy a fast data connection. This is your complete guide for buying a sim card in Estonia in 2021 with the best network, up to date prices as per February 2021 and where to buy one.

All the info in this blog are based on my own experiences traveling in Estonia and looking for the best sim card for tourists.

I flew into Tallinn, a nice and modern airport. Upon arrival I checked out the prices for buying a sim card at Tallinn Airport and while strolling through the city I hopped into mobile phone stores to see what they were offering.

As a full time travel blogger the first thing I do when arriving at a new country is to make sure I get online. The best way to do so is to buy a local sim card with data. All around the world I researched for the best local prepaid sim cards: USA, Guatemala, Indonesia, Finland, Poland and many more.

Estonia sim cards and traveling in Europe

Since summer of 2017 roaming charges in the EU are from the past and it is free to roam with most European sim cards at no extra costs. But be careful there are often still a bunch of restrictions.

When buying an Estonia sim card also ask the mobile internet provider if you can use your data allowance in other European countries. At the Telia and Tele2 shop it was a hard no!

For traveling in Europe I can recommend you the Orange prepaid sim card with 20GB data valid in all 35 countries. Click on the link for more info or click here for the 8 best sim cards for Europe that I found across the internet.

Mobile internet operators in Estonia

There are 3 mobile internet providers that sell an Estonia prepaid sim card:

  • Telia
  • Tele2
  • Elisa

At Tallinn Airport they also offer a SUPER sim card for Estonia, but you won’t find any SUPER shops around the country.

Best Estonia mobile network

To determine the best Estonia sim card let's also have a look at the network coverage maps of all the mobile internet providers.

Is there 5G in Estonia?

Yes, as of February 2021 there is no 5G in Estonia, but it is limited to the Tallinn only. The 5G network in Estonia is still very small.

Elisa Estonia 4G/5G network

Telia Estonia 4G/5G network

Tele2 Estonia 4G/5G network

From the above data we can see that the mobile internet networks in Estonia are pretty similar. It is remarkable that TELE2 does NOT cover the islands in the West and therefore I would not recommend tourists traveling there to buy a TELE2 prepaid sim card in Estonia.

Based on the network we see that most of the tourist destinations in Estonia are covered by a 4G signal. Based on the prices I come to the following conclusion:

TELE2 is the best prepaid sim card in Estonia for tourists in 2021!

You can even choose if you want calling credit included or not with a TELE2 sim card and best thing is you can buy it straight on arrival at Tallinn Airport.

When you are traveling from Estonia onwards to other countries in Europe then I can NOT recommend you Estonia prepaid sim cards. They do NOT allow you free roaming in Europe. You will either have to buy another sim card in the next country or buy a sim card for Europe online.
