The first thing you see when you visit Hotel Sonnalp's website is this inviting slogan: 'Dream holidays at a dream location'. Exactly that is what we were looking for on our recent trip to Obereggen in the beautiful Italian Dolomites.
We are real outdoor enthusiasts and the best hotel for us is the one where you walk outside and are directly in the middle of nature. During our recent road trip in the Dolomites, Hotel Sonnalp was one of our amazing destinations. Keep reading to find out why we loved staying at Hotel Sonnalp in Obereggen so much.

Location
Location for us is always key. In this case, travelling through the Dolomites, we were looking for the best outdoor opportunities. Hotel Sonnalp is located in Obereggen in South Tyrol.
In Winter time the hotel is located directly at the Eben ski slope. So for all your winter sport enthusiasts, mark this place!! The Eben ski slope is part of the Latemar Ski Resort.
Obereggen is a winter sport village with 107km of ski slopes and Obereggen and Latemar Ski Resort are part of the larger Ski area of Val di Fiemme.

Obereggen is located just 20 minutes from Bolzano and is known to have the most hours of sunshine of South Tyrol.
We visited the Dolomites in Summer, and Hotel Sonnalp and its beautiful location are ideal for long walking and cycling tours. It's the perfect destination for a summer holiday full of active outdoor activities.
We stayed two nights at Hotel Sonnalp and we were only found outside in the mountains during our stay. I loved the fact that you could walk out the front door of the hotel and walk straight onto some amazing walking routes and meadows full of cows. That is the best feeling, a hotel located directly on hiking trails. The very best thing is to come back from the walk and have an ice-cold drink on the hotel terrace, while you take in the impressive mountain views, a dream!
Wellness & Spa
Of course the outdoor world is best combined with a wonderful wellness session. Hotel Sonnalp luckily has an amazing wellness in their basement and you should really experience at least once during your stay. Their pool and wellness are spread across two floors
On the first floor you can find the indoor and outdoor pool.
The indoor pool is a lovely 29 degrees Celsius.
The outdoor pool is opened year round and is heated to 31.5 degrees Celsius. The outdoor pool also has a whirlpool bench and panoramic mountain views.
What better thing to do than to relax in the heated outdoor pool while you're being amazed by these beautiful nature surroundings.
There are also massage facilities for those who need some extra pampering after some amazing outdoor activities in the Dolomites.
You can also find the small gym in the hotel.
Moving on to the second floor you can find Hotel Sonnalps' Sauna World. They offer Finnish sauna's, infrared sauna's, bio sauna and a steam bath.
You can also find a relaxing tea corner and a relaxation room with comfortable beds and the same impressive views here.
Gourmet
A stay at Hotel Sonnalp always comes with half-board. I think, next to the amazing mountain location of this hotel, their cuisine is the second best thing!
Their head chef combines regional and Italian cuisine with a special flair. He gets inspired by the alpine character and the Mediterranean facets of the country. An absolute amazing and outstanding culinary experience.
Your day starts with breakfast and at Hotel Sonnalp you couldn't wish for a better start of the day. They offer a wide range of choices at their breakfast buffet. You can also order freshly made eggs, any style. Most of their ingredients and products are local produce.
For dinner you can walk in from 7PM. We intensely enjoyed our dinners at Hotel Sonnalp. It starts withthe best personal service from the staff who leave take care of you down to the last detail.
You're offered a 5 course gourmet menu to choose from. There is also a salad buffet.
For dinner they have weekly Italian and South Tyrolean evenings and on Sundays they have an elegant gala dinner. The food at Hotel Sonnalp make your taste buds go wild. It's a taste experience that leaves nothing to be desired.
Room
We were given a room on the top floor of the hotel and a balcony facing the front of the hotel with those priceless panoramic mountain views. It's everything you want when travelling the Dolomites, a room with a view. Hotel Sonnalp definitely delivers here. All their rooms offer panoramic views of the mountains, the slopes or the flowering meadows.
Their rooms are exactly what you would expect from a hotel room in the mountains. They have this alpine look and feel yet a very cozy ambience to it. The rooms are modern and stylish.
Our room had a large and comfortable bed and a separate sitting area with a sofa bed. The bathroom is very modern with and includes a lovely rain shower.
The room also has a wellness bag waiting for you upon arrival. The bag includes bathrobes and slippers. Feel free to use them during your stay at Hotel Sonnalp.

Outdoor activities
I have mentioned the many outdoor possibilities before, but we'd like to list our favorite things to do here. Things we think you really shouldn't miss out on when staying at Hotel Sonnalp.
Our main advice: explore the outdoors!
You're surrounded by the Latemar mountain range. They invite you to explore them by foot, by bike, by cable car, which ever way suits you.
Latemarium
The Latemarium is an exciting alpine realm extending around the Latemar massif. After reading and hearing all about Latermarium I would subscribe as an adventure paradise.
The Latemar 360° panoramic terraces offer sensational views all across the Latemar mountain range. There is also a thick network of thematic trails that allow you to expand your knowledge on the flora, fauna, geology and agricultural practices of the alpine area.
The Latemar massif is a jewel of Mother Nature and Latemarium is the ultimate playground for young and old where you can truly experience nature and the outdoor world. You can find here some of the best trails of the Dolomites!
We found this panoramic map full with exciting and fun outdoor activities for the whole family. You can get this map at the reception of the hotel.
Hiking trail nr. 9 runs directly in front of Hotel Sonnalp. So we took this route up to the Laner Alm.
We enjoyed an ice cold drink up there and of course the impressive Latemar mountain views. From there we continued following trail nr. 10 and nr. 11 back to Obereggen and back to Hotel Sonnalp. It's a nice 7km loop with many altimeters. Along the way you will be rewarded with the most beautiful views and the company of the cows.
Lago di Carezza
Lago di Carezza is one of the most famous spots in the Dolomites. It's a beautiful mountain lake and famous for its intense blue water. All that of course with an impressive mountain background. The images on internet look amazing. But it gets even more impressive when you visit the lake yourself and be amazed by the bright colors of the lake and the amazing mountain scenery.
You can walk all around Lago di Carezza, it's just a 2.5 km loop and a very easy walk, anyone can do it!

The great thing is that Hotel Sonnalp is located only 25 minutes by car from Lago di Carezza. This makes it the number one thing to do when staying at Hotel Sonnalp. You can also walk from Hotel Sonnalp to Lago di Carezza. It's signposted right in front of the hotel, so you can immediately start your walk there. It's a 7.5 km walk one way.
Hotel Sonnalp Review
It's simply picture perfect when you arrive at Hotel Sonnalp. The Hotel is the last building on a dead-end road. The hotel overlooks the amazing and impressive mountains and dozens of cows walk through the meadow directly in front of the hotel.
As soon as you get out of the car you can hear the cow bells. It's something you get used to and it totally fits the picture.
As soon as you walk into the hotel you receive a very warm welcome by every staff member you meet.It feels very homely, nice and cozy. You almost get the idea that you're visiting a family member, that's how comfortable they make you feel.
They continue this family approach everywhere. Questions at reception are answered in detail and the service in the restaurant is truly fantastic.
On Sunday you're even invited to a welcome drink in the lobby of the hotel. The owner and staff members walk around with drinks and small bites. A very casual way of getting to know the owners and other guests.
We truly felt at home at Hotel Sonnalp, we enjoyed the endless outdoor activities and opportunities right at the doorstep of the hotel.
Hotel Sonnalp is absolutely your place to go if you're looking for a luxurious stay with a very personal approach and nature at the doorstep of the hotel.
