February 2019 it was my second time visiting Poland as via London Luton Airport I found a cheap flight to Gdansk. In Europe I already researched the best sim cards in Spain, UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and I wanted to add Poland to the list too. Therefore I spent one morning in Gdansk finding all the mobile internet operator shops in the city center and paid them a visit to find the best prepaid sim card in Poland for tourists.
The stunning pictures of the Gdansk city center were one of the reasons I always wanted to visit this city, but after my trip to Warsaw in 2014 I had never been visiting Poland again. A shame, because traveling in Poland is so worth it. Especially now that all the Western European cities get so expensive and Poland travel is still affordable. A 4-star hotel for less than €80 a night, a meal in a restaurant for €5-8. It is all still possible in Poland.
Free roaming in the EU
As of June 2007 the EU banned international roaming fees within 30 countries of the European Union including Norway. Therefore the data on a Poland sim card can be used for traveling within Europe.
Free EU roaming on Poland sim cards
Unfortunately I found out that Poland mobile internet operators asked to be granted to not be part of the free EU roaming. This request has been honored due to the very low prices for data in Poland. Therefore is you are traveling in Europe I would not recommend doing so with a Poland prepaid sim card! I try it out myself and it did NOT work, keep on reading for my experiences. If you are looking for the best sim card for Europe then click here and read all about it in my newest article.

Mobile internet operators in Poland
There are 4 mobile internet providers in Poland that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists:
All the above mobile internet providers have shops in all big cities in Poland and have extended 4G networks to use your sim card while traveling in Poland.
Best 4G network in Poland
To find out the best sim card for traveling in Poland I also like to look at the 4G network coverage. Imagine you take the bus from Warsaw to Gdansk and as soon as you leave the city you have no signal. That is not what we want!
4G Play Poland
4G T-Mobile Poland
4G Plus Poland
4G Orange Poland
On the above images we can clearly see that Orange has the best 4G network coverage in Poland. That said all the 4 mobile internet operators have good network coverage in the best places to see in Poland: Warsaw, Gdansk, Poznan, Krakow, Wroclaw, etc.
Based on the 4G network coverage I would say that Orange is the best Poland sim card for tourists.
Prices prepaid sim card Poland
The best 4G network is one thing, but of course we will also have a look at the prices and the available prepaid sim cards in Poland for tourists. I checked out all the mobile internet provider shops and they informed me which Poland prepaid sim cards they had for sale. This is the outcome.
The used currency in Poland is the Zloty. 1 Zloty = € 0,23 = $0,25
Orange Poland prepaid sim card
Let’s first have a look at the available Orange Poland prepaid sim cards. Prices are really competitive and sim cards with data already start from $1,5. Yes that is super cheap compared to its neighbouring country Germany where 1GB cost approximately $11.
Looking at the above I was directly tempted to just buy a 5 Zloty sim card just for the sake of trying it, because it is even less then a coffee in Poland.
The moment I wanted to buy the 5 Zloty prepaid sim card suddenly the guy told me that there was only 2GB available for EU roaming. A bit weird… didn’t the European Union say data roaming was free? Anyway even 2GB for a little over €1 was amazing. I bought it just to try it out… keep on reading what eventually happened.
Orange Poland sim card did not work in EU
Personally I would never recommend you to buy a Poland sim card for traveling in Europe. To test it out I bought the cheapest Orange Poland sim card available. For 5 Zloty (€1,15) I bought 6GB data in Poland and 2GB in Europe. When I landed in Oslo, Norway my Orange Poland sim card worked for like 15 minutes and then kept on saying insufficient funds.
When looking for sim cards to travel in Europe this is not what we want! Free data roaming in Europe is the best invention since the Euro, but like I said in the beginning of the article Poland holds a special place and the free data roaming for Polish sim cards can not be guaranteed!
So buying an Orange Poland sim card is fine for when you stick around Poland, not for traveling in Europe.
There is an Orange sim card for Europe available online. It gives you: 10GB data in over 30m countries and 200 minutes worldwide calling time. Click on the link to order it online and get it shipped to your home address for free.
Plus Poland prepaid sim card
Trying to find out what Poland prepaid sim cards for tourists they offer at Plus was a bit of a challenge. I got a couple different answers on my questions in two different Plus stores. But eventually I think I found all the information I needed.
To be honest I found the available prepaid data sim cards of Plus Poland a little weird or at least no one could exactly explain me what was what! Personally I would not choose their service, simple because buying a Poland sim card for tourists at Plus was not well explained.
T-Mobile Poland prepaid sim card
At T-Mobile Poland it was very clear and the provided information was easy to understand. They only have two Polish sim cards for tourists available.
The small prepaid sim card package would not be my thing as 1GB I can easily slam in a couple hours when bored on a long bus ride. The bigger data package is too expensive compared to the other mobile internet operators in Poland. At least it is valid for 30 days though.
Play Poland prepaid sim card
The last option for buying a Poland prepaid sim card is Play. Their 4G network is the smallest in Poland but lets see what they have to offer. In total they have three Poland sim cards for tourists.
They have no ultra cheap prepaid sim card available like the other three mobile internet operators in Poland have. However they offer unlimited data for 30 Zloty, but unfortunately only 15GB with full speed! What will be the speed afterwards? Just enough to WhatsApp? We will never know… not a fan of these offers!
Best Poland prepaid sim card for tourists
Taking in all the above there is actually a simple conclusion when looking at the best Polish sim card for travelers. Orange has the best 4G network and the best data package available. For less than €5 you get 50GB, that is an insane offer!
Personally I don’t call and text and despite the fact that free data roaming in the EU did not work for Orange Poland I would still claim that:
Orange is the best Poland prepaid sim card for tourists!
In total I wrote now more than 30 sim card for tourist articles from countries all over the world: Greece, Vietnam, Georgia, Indonesia and almost all European countries. It started simply because I wanted to find the best deal for myself. Now I am traveling for more than 6 years continuously around the world and by documenting all my adventures I started earning money with travel blogging.
I hope all the above information about buying a prepaid sim card in Poland was useful for your trip to Poland.
