As part of my trip through Europe for my Instagram in July 2019 I was able to travel to Slovenia. My Slovenia trip didn’t last long, but it was already my third time in this charming country. This time I also decided to research what is the best prepaid Slovenia sim card for tourists.

What I found out is that the prepaid sim card business in small countries like for example CroatiaDenmark or Netherlands is not that thriving and there are not that many options. The same counts for Slovenia sim cards for tourists. Looking for the best Europe sim card with data for your trip? Click on the link and I tell you all the info you need to know.

Mobile internet operators

There are actually 4 mobile internet operators in Slovenia and for such a small country that is a lot:

  • Telekom Slovenia
  • Telemach Slovenia
  • A1 Slovenia
  • T2

I already quickly found out that T2 does not have any Slovenia prepaid sim cards. Therefore this research for finding the best Slovenia prepaid sim card is focussed on Telekom, Telemach and A1.

Best Slovenia mobile internet network

When you have a look at the coverage maps of those 3 mobile internet providers (source nperf.com) you can quickly see that networks are pretty small. I mean most of the country is not covered with a phone signal so going off the beaten path in Slovenia is probably an amazing thing to do.

From the above Slovenia network coverage maps (source nperf .com) we can clearly see that Telemach has a very weak network and therefore in my opinion is not an option considering when looking for the best prepaid sim card in Slovenia for tourists.

Where to buy a Slovenia prepaid sim card

When arriving at Ljubljana Airport there are no sim card vendors in the Arrivals Hall this is probably because hardly any intercontinental flights arrive at Ljubljana Airport. European sim cards all have free roaming in Slovenia so they don’t need to buy a Slovenia prepaid sim card in general.

When you get to Ljubljana city center there are multiple mobile internet shops around the city center. There is an A1 shop and a couple Telekom and Telemach shops around as well. Just type the by you preferred mobile operator in Google Maps and walk to one of the shops. Ljubljana is a small city.

What to bring when buying a Slovenia sim card

Unlike almost any other European country in Slovenia you do NOT need to bring a passport when buying a prepaid Slovenia sim card.

Prices prepaid Slovenia sim card

Telekom Slovenia

They have two different Slovenia sim cards for tourists available at Telekom Slovenia:

  • Data only sim with 5 GB. This prepaid sim card cost €13,50 and is valid for 30 days. The data is only valid in Slovenia and NOT in the EU.
  • Prepaid sim card with 3000 units. 1 unit is 1 minute calling, 1 sms or 1 MB. This prepaid sim card cost €13,50 and is valid for 30 days. The data is only valid in Slovenia and NOT in the EU.

For example with this sim card you can send 100 sms, call 200 minutes and have 2.7 GB data in 30 days.

These Telekom Slovenia prepaid sim cards are not really my favorite and for traveling in Europe this sim card is a no-go obviously.

Telemach Slovenia

There is one Telemach prepaid Slovenia sim cards for tourists.

  • The sim card costs €2,5 and gives you 3000 units per day for 4 days. Every extra day costs €1. You can top up at any convenient stores or online.

This means either 3000 MB, 3000 minutes, 3000 sms or a mix of this of course per day. All only for use in Slovenia. Roaming in EU is limited to 200 MB per day.

This sim card is pretty flexible for short term stay in Slovenia, but it definitely is not the right sim card for traveling in Europe.

A1 Slovenia

At A1 Slovenia they also have only one Slovenia prepaid sim card for tourists available. It costs €1. You can then buy a top up package for €7.99 which is valid for 30 days and gives you 10,000 units and free calls to any A1 number.

In the above infographic it says the sim card comes with €5 credit, but this is already deducted so you still have to pay the €7.99 plus the €1 for the sim card.

Best Slovenia prepaid sim card

Comparing all the above Slovenia sim cards for tourists I can come to the following conclusions:

  • Telemach Slovenia sim card is very flexible.
  • Telemach is the cheapest for a 1 week Slovenia trip.
  • The network of Telemach is small/weak.
  • Telekom Slovenia is not good value for money.
  • A1 is good value for money.
  • A1 has the best network in Slovenia.

Therefore it is pretty easy to determine that A1 is the best prepaid sim card in Slovenia.
