When you are traveling to Spain I am pretty sure you want to keep the people back home up to date about how things are going on your trip. Surely you don’t want your Spain holiday to get ruined by outrageous roaming costs and therefore I recommend you buying a sim card in Spain. It is simple, just walk in to any mobile provider shop and ask for a prepaid Spain sim card, put it in your phone, activate it and within a minute your Spain sim card is connected.

There are always kiosks at the airports selling prepaid sim cards with data. Check here a full guide for buying a sim card at Barcelona Airport. Mobile internet providers in Spain

Spain has 4 big mobile internet providers that all sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. Orange and Vodafone are the two well known European brands and then there is also Movistar and Yoigo. To find out what is the best prepaid sim card in Spain for tourists I compared all the prices and looked at their 4G coverage to come to a conclusion.

Where to buy a Spain sim card

At any international airport you will find either mobile internet provider shops or book shops selling local sim cards. It is one of the first things I do when I arrive, but be aware that buying a sim card at the airport is always much more expensive than in the city. Buying a Belgium sim card is an exception as the data sim cards at Brussels Airport are cheaper.

Once you are settled in your hotel simply type in the by you preferred Spain sim card provider in Google Maps. The mobile phone shops are mostly always clustered in the city center. In Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Madrid it is very easy to find a shop around you.

To find out for you what is the best sim card for Spain I did an inquiry in all the above cities over the course of the last 3 months of 2018.

Prices Spain sim card

Compared to sim cards in Netherlands or a prepaid sim card in Germany, Spain prices are moderate. They are not the cheapest either though, value for money could be better! There are not really big data packages available, like for example France sim cards. Let’s have a look at all the prices.

All the Spain mobile internet providers are constantly throwing with offers. In general I found out that although they claim that offers are only available from time to time, there always is an offer available!

Prepaid Movistar sim card

In two different Movistar shops around Spain they were not really enthusiastic when I asked information about a Spain prepaid sim card with data. I found out kind of quickly why, but still Movistar your service is shit. Just the fact that I am only coming for a Spain sim card for tourists you don’t need to threat me like Im shit!

movistar shop

Movistar is not really interested in selling a data sim for Spain. There is only one Movistar sim card available for prepaid.

Prepaid - €15

  • 2 GB data valid all over Europe
  • Calling NOT included
  • 30 days valid

I can tell you already that a Movistar sim card is not the best prepaid sim card for Spain!

Prepaid Vodafone Spain sim card

There are three different Vodafone Spain prepaid sim card packages available.

  • 1,5 GB data valid all over Europe
  • 15 min calling credit
  • Valid 30 days

Mega User - €20

  • 3,5 GB data valid all over Europe
  • 60 min calling credit
  • Free Social Media (Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc.)

From November 2018 until February 2019 Vodafone Spain has a promotional offer, which gives you 3 times as much data per package. So for €10 you get 4,5GB, for €15 you get 6GB and for €20 you get 10,5GB data. Very generous, definitely worth considering to buy this Spain sim card from Vodafone.

Network coverage Spain sim cards

Another important ranking factor is how good the mobile networks are per internet provider. To compare their networks I always use the 4G coverage maps. So lets have a look and see who has the strongest network.

You don’t want to go on a road trip in Spain and buy a sim card that works perfect in the city but as soon as you drive out you don’t have a connection. The network is may be even more important than the price. This depends though where you go in Spain.

4G network coverage map Vodafone Spain

4g network vodafone spain

4G network coverage map Orange Spain

4G network coverage map Yoigo Spain

The above 4G coverage maps tell us that for a road trip in Spain a Yoigo sim card probably would not be the best idea. To me network is key in finding the right mobile internet provider as mostly prices differ only a little bit!

Best prepaid Spain sim card for tourists

This article about the best Spain sim card is not sponsored neither am I affiliated to any of the mobile internet providers In Spain. This is an independent inquiry just because I buy a sim card wherever I travel. As a full time professional travel blogger being online is part of my job and the cheapest option to do so when you travel is to buy local sim cards.

When comparing the prices, the sim cards with data and the 4G coverage maps I come to the following conclusion.

Orange is the best prepaid Spain sim card!

Movistar has the best network, but Vodafone and Orange are not far behind either. A Movistar sim card is not recommended at all and the prices for Vodafone and Orange are kind of similar. The slightly better 4G network coverage across the country made me decide to rate Orange as the best sim card in Spain for tourists.

Orange sim cards can also be purchased online. Free shipping to your home address through this link. A Europe sim card valid in 30 countries with 10GB data.

I hope this article was helpful for you! Have a safe trip to Spain.
