If you haven't been to Mexico before you’re likely to stay in a large resort or perhaps somewhere in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, both cities are drawing many tourists. Obviously, there are also other places to visit which are less known by the large audience. Puerto Morelos is one of those little Caribbean towns with a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Read all about it in my Puerto Morelos travel blog.

If you are looking for a “Spring Break Destination” or are looking for a party scene, Puerto Morelos is NOT the place for you. That does not mean it’s not worthwhile to visit or boring though - it surprisingly has a lot of activities and plenty things to do. So ff you’re looking for an escape of the hectic crowded streets of Playa and Cancun, Puerto Morelos is absolutely perfect for you!

Imagine...ocean waves gently lapping against the shore, creating a soothing ambience that is perfect for sleep... who doesn’t like that?

Hacienda Morelos Beachfront Hotel

I managed to find a place called Hacienda Morelos Hotel in Puerto Morelos where I was suited at my needs for falling asleep with in the background the sounds of the ocean. Ocean breeze sleeping is the best, at least for me. I will tell you more about my experiences of the Hacienda Morelos Hotel below.

First impression

The charming hotel, located in front of the beach, boosts a colonial exterior. When entering the hotel, you will find an old Yucatan hacienda interior and the reception and concierge are located near the main entrance. Don’t expect any fanciness or design style here but rather a local ambiance.

We arrived at the hotel the day after we completed our Tulum and Coba tour and when arriving at the hotel we were greeted by the hospitable hotel manager. This friendly Mexican, who gained experience in diverse Hotel segments around the world, is very passionate about Hacienda Morelos Hotel and after his warm welcome he showed us around.

The biggest points of attraction at first sight for me was the fantastic location right on the beach and a short walk from the plaza. Without a doubt, the most beautiful part of Puerto Morelos is right in front of the hotel. Hotel Hacienda Morelos Beachfront Hotel is just a few yards away from the second world largest coral reef barrier.

Services

The Hacienda Morelos offers a pool, restaurant, bar, beach club, terrace and venues for events, for example weddings, movie nights or live music. The pool at Hacienda Morelos Hotel is perfect for cooling off from the heat of the Caribbean Sea.

The Hotel Hacienda Morelos’ restaurant, the Coyote Apache, is an open-bar restaurant that offers a variety of Mexican and international dishes, open from 8 am to 10 PM. Also, here the big plus of the restaurant is the view and location at the beach front.

We enjoyed the beautiful ocean view especially during our breakfasts. For breakfast they serve you a fruit platter and you have different choices from the breakfast menu. Overall the breakfast was fine and relaxing as they take the time to serve you at your needs but serving a local fresh fruit juice instead of a canned juice would have made it even better.

At night you can chill in the wonderful setting to experience the Caribbean’s intense sunsets or enjoy seafood at the Morelos Beach Club restaurant. During the day at the beach club you can have a refreshing drink, rest or read a book as I did.

The hotel often offers live music or weekly events so if you want to be more entertained this is also an option.

At the concierge desk they are willing to advise you on all the activities and day trips the region offers and there are multiple options to choose from. If you want a full day of adrenaline and fun I would highly recommend you the Selvatica Extreme Canopy Adventure.

Rooms Hacienda Morelos Beachfront Hotel

The colonial style is everywhere in the hotel. It offers 30 comfortable rooms with ocean views.  Located on three floors, on the first floor these colonial-style rooms offer direct access to the pool and beach and the two upper floors have balconies with sea view. The second floor has big balconies, the third floor has smaller balconies. If you are an early bird you can watch the sunrise from your balcony, if you are not the one who catches the worm make sure to set your alarm as the sunrise is worthwhile to start your day with.

We stayed at the second floor and the room was plain but clean and spacious. The bathrooms have a shower and a toilet.  When you are travelling in Mexico you will notice that a good hot shower with sufficient pressure is quite rare. Well, I can tell you that the shower in Hacienda Morelos Hotel was one of the best I experienced during my trip to Yucatan Peninsula. Although the room and bathroom are rather basic, in the end it is the quality that counts… You can have the most stylish design room but if only a few cold drops are coming from the shower you will not be happy. The shower at Hacienda Morelos Beachfront Hotel was great and although I don’t want to waste water I could not help myself to fuel my shower addiction here.

Review Hacienda Morelos

Overall the Hacienda Morelos Beachfront Hotel is clean and offers spacious rooms with ocean view. The main attraction for me was the location; beachfront and on walking distance from the central plaza and restaurants. Puerto Morelos has a small town feel without the tourism invasion of Cancun or Playa del Carmen. The Hacienda felt like a home as opposed to a large resort and due to the good vibes of the Hotel Manager and his staff it made it a charming overall stay.
