Traveltomtom recommends buying a Vodafone sim card at Nadi Airport. Vodafone is more expensive than Digicel, but Vodafone has much better network coverage in Fiji.

But local prepaid sim cards are not the only way to stay connected, you can also order an e-sim card for Fiji on the internet and arrive prepared. E-sim cards for Fiji start from $7.5 USD. See below for more info.

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Nadi in 2024 is an e-sim card. No need to visit a sim card store on arrival in Fiji anymore, nor need to buy a sim card at Nadi Airport. As soon as the plane lands you are already online. An e-sim instantly connects to an available network.

Arrival at Nadi International Airport

traveltomtom visit fiji

Although Nadi is NOT the capital of Fiji it is the most famous city and pretty much all international flights arriving in Fiji come through Nadi. The Nadi Airport is very easy going and pretty small. There is free WiFi at Nadi Airport but it wasn’t really working as fast as I hoped. But you are able to send WhatsApp messages and check your email if you are a little patient.

Last year I traveled through Nadi Airport 3 times and every time I passed through this airport I instantly got those islandlife and holiday feelings. After you disembark the plane you will be guided to passport control. In the waiting hall there was in my case always a live band playing some uplifting tunes to make people smile and welcome them to Fiji even before their passport is stamped.

Behind passport control you will take the escalator down to the Baggage Claim Hall. On your left hand side there are 3 luggage belts on your right hand side there is the duty free.

arriving nadi airport baggage claim hall

In the Baggage Claim Hall there are signs everywhere from Digicel and Vodafone, the two mobile internet operators in Fiji about prepaid sim cards for Fiji for tourists. After you picked up your luggage you have to go through a last customs check. All your hand luggage and checked-in luggage will be scanned.

After your luggage went through the scan the sliding door will lead you into the Arrival Hall. Here you will find the tourist information desk, ATM’s, taxi and tour operator services, a cafe and sim card shops.

Those traveling with drones be prepared to go to some paperwork, my best tip for bringing a drone to Nadi Airport is to have a (fake) onwards ticket for the next day. After the bag goes through the scanner they will ask you if you have a drone inside and you need to register it. If you show them your flight ticket for the next day, they will let you go immediately.

Where to buy a sim card at Nadi Airport

It is very easy to find the sim card shops at Nadi Airport where they sell tourist sim cards for Fiji. As soon as you pass through the sliding doors and walk into the Arrival Hall you will see a Digicel store on your right and a Vodafone store on your left. It is impossible to miss, especially since everywhere on the airport you will see advertisement about a ‘free sim card for Fiji’.

Both, the Vodafone as well as the Digicel shop at Nadi Airport are open 24 hours and you can pay in USD as well as Australian, New Zealand and of course in Fiji Dollar. They also accept Visa and Mastercard.

Prices prepaid sim cards Nadi Airport

All the information below is updated in June 2024 and prices are in Fiji Dollar and as per June 2024 $1 USD = $2.22 FJD and $1 FJD = $0.45 USD.

Fiji has so called tourist sim cards for foreigners willing to buy a prepaid sim card in Fiji with a foreign passport. Therefore the prices for sim cards at Nadi Airport are the same as elsewhere in Fiji in Digicel and Vodafone stores around the island.

Vodafone

vodafone nadi airport prepaid tourist sim cards

Vodafone Fiji offers 6 different prepaid sim card plans for tourists at the moment. Two plans for $70 FJD and 2 plans for $100 FJD. Then they offer the following two plans for tourists:

  • 7 GB data + $10 FJD credit + 60 local & 60 international minutes for 10 days = $35 FJD - $16 USD
  • 100 GB data for 15 days = $65 FJD - $29 USD

Big data bundles as you can see and much more affordable than e-sim cards for Fiji.

Digicel

digicel nadi airport prepaid tourist sim cards

Digicel is a little cheaper compared to Vodafone and they in fact offer a free sim card for Fiji with 3 GB data for 48 hours. However, max data speed is 3G on this sim card deal. It is better to go for one of the other prepaid sim card deals if you choose to buy a Digicel sim card for traveling in Fiji.

  • 30 GB data-only for 3 days = $10 FJD - $4.5 USD
  • 75 GB data-only for 7 days = $15 FJD - $6.8 USD
  • 125 GB data + 60 minutes for 30 days = $30 FJD - $13.5 USD

A simple conclusion that Digicel prepaid sim cards are much cheaper than Vodafone prepaid sim cards for tourists in Fiji.

Best sim card for tourists at Nadi Airport

It is a simple conclusion that Digicel gives you the best value for money when you are looking at the Fiji sim card prices for tourists at Nadi Airport. However, it is Vodafone that has much better network coverage around the country. So depending of the purpose of your trip you might want to consider spending a couple dollar extra and get a Vodafone prepaid sim card.

The 4G/5G network coverage in Fiji differs per mobile internet operator. However, in all the popular tourist destinations in Fiji you will find a 4G signal, regardless if you have a Vodafone or a Digicel sim card. But if you are on a road trip in Fiji or going to more off the beaten path places to see in Fiji then it is recommended to buy a Vodafone sim card.
